On December 1, 2013 the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) spearheaded the World AIDS Day in Tbilisi in close cooperation and partnership with Georgian Youth Development and Education Association and Public Union Bemoni by conducting an information and education campaign.

Within the framework  of the campaign numerous activities were conducted. Volunteering youth were offered free of charge examination on HIV and also got consultations at The Tbilisi State Medical University. The participants  publicly paced down from Vake Park to Amirani Movie Theater, disseminating IEC on HIV infection and sharing information on HIV consultation and tests to passersby. Moreover, symbolic activities were performed by youth in various public places and bus stations throughout Tbilisi, demonstrating the importance of struggling against HIV prevention and promoting participatory approach in the process. 

The Campaign aimed to  increase  youth awareness on  Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and to promote services  offered at  the Youth Friendly  Reproductive Health  Centers.

The series of events were concluded by screening a movie “Philadelphia” at the local Movie Theater. The movie was specifically selected as it portrays the crucial issues of HIV prevention and associated stigma and discrimination. 

UNFPA Georgia County Office marks the World AIDS Day every year.  By December 1, 2013 a total of 4,084  HIV/AIDS cases have been registered in Georgia. Young people are one of the most vulnerable groups with regard to HIV/AIDS and UNFPA places special emphasis on youth development and their empowerment to take informed decision in terms of their health and life.
