On 24-25 July UNFPA/Georgia CO in cooperation with  the National Center for Disease Control & Public Health organized the Workshop on Cancer Screening Programmes Strategy Elaboration in Georgia. 

The workshop was opened by Ms. Mariam Jashi, Deputy Minister of Labor, Health and Social Affairs of Georgia, Mr. Amiran Gamkrelidze, the General Director of  National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, Mr. Mamuka Katsarava, the Head of the Department of Social Services and Culture of Tbilisi Municipality and Ms. Tamar Khomasuridze, Assistant Representative, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Georgia.

The workshop aimed at elaboration of the national strategy on cancer screening based on the results and evidences of the ongoing programmes in Tbilisi and regions and to define major priorities of the strategy.

“The elaboration of the strategy on Cancer Screening Programmes is of the utmost significance,  especially the organized, sustainable cervical cancer screening programme which leads to the increased coverage of the target population  and decreases morbidity and mortality of women, caused by cervical cancer”-said Ms. Khomasuridze.

The workshop was attended by Dr Philip Davies, Director General, European Cervical Cancer Association and leading experts from National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, National Screening Center, UNFPA and other experts in the field.
