On December 3-5, the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) Georgia Country Office conducted a series of trainings for medical staff in Guria and Imereti to improve the involvement of men in antenatal care.
On December 3 - in Ozurgeti, on December 4 - in Kutaisi, and on December 5 - in Sachkhere, representatives of medical personnel met with Dr. Platon Machavariani, obstetrician-gynecologists Maka Chikovani and Sophio Bojgua.
The health sector is an important mediator in facilitating early involvement of fathers in the care of children and families. However, maternal and child health care providers tend to focus primarily on mothers and children, and only occasionally concentrate on the involvement of men - as parents, partners, and persons responsible for the care of mothers and children.
The training module is designed for medical staff involved in antenatal care and serves to involve men more actively in the processes related to pregnancy and childbirth, which will contribute not only to the health and well-being of women and children, but also to the health and well-being of men themselves.
The module was developed as part of the EU supported Programme – “EU 4 Gender Equality: Together Against Gender Stereotypes and Gender-Based Violence” jointly implemented by the UN Women and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
