On May 27, 2014 High level meeting on Prevention of Early Marriages in Georgia to Advance Gender Equality and Reproductive Health of Women was organized in Holiday Inn Tbilisi to provide forum and encourage dialogue between stakeholders and policymakers, to fully reflect the essence of the issue, its reasons and outcomes in Georgia and develop recommendations for further actions in terms of legislative and policy environment and programming, data collection and analysis, as well as public awareness raising and change of attitude towards the issue. Representatives of the Gender Equality Council of the Parliament, Government as well as Civil Society expressed deep concern regarding alarming indicators of early marriage in the country. Georgia is on the second place in Eastern Europe with the early marriage rate, which requires strong public attention and policy and legislative environment in place, which will prevent early marriage practices and enhance gender equality.
