The Library Named after Mirza Gelovani (address: 99 Vazha-Pshavela Ave, Tbilisi) will be hosting “60+ Club for Healthy & Active Life” since October 10.
“60+ Club” is a service launched by Tbilisi City Hall for citizens aged 60 and over, who want to stay physically and mentally healthy and be active members of society. Club members will have the opportunity to acquire new skills, share their experiences, plan and implement events, and meet new people.
Club members can attend daily activities specially designed for them: physical activities for improving fitness, art therapy, etc. “60+ Club” will be open from Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 19:00. Prior registration is required and interested persons can register at the Library.
Similar clubs have been functioning for many years in different countries of the world, including Georgia. This time, the first branch of the club is being opened in Tbilisi.
Ninia Macharashvili, Head of Tbilisi Multifunctional Libraries Association:
It is our great honour to support the representatives of the older generation to remain active and integrated citizens, to live a healthy and pleasant life. Since a significant part of the users of Tbilisi libraries are people of this age, it is even more important for us to establish this club in order to satisfy the interest of our users. In the future, other branches will also house the club, which will help more older people to improve their quality of life and express themselves.”
Lela Bakradze, Head of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Georgia Country Office:
Ageing population is an issue of high importance for Georgia, which means an increase in the proportion of older persons and it is time to implement concrete interventions and take steps to make old age the beginning of a new stage of life for senior citizens. Experience shows that access to services such as clubs for healthy and active aging reduces feelings of loneliness among older persons and positively affects their health. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) welcomes Tbilisi City Hall’s willingness to cooperate and the joint efforts to promote the rights and improve the well-being of older persons.”
The project “60+ Club” is implemented by Tbilisi City Hall and Tbilisi Multifunctional Libraries Association, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
